What Are Honeycomb Sweets?

We are sure it is no surprise that the honeycomb you often eat in chocolate is not actually honeycombs from a beehive as the name might suggest, in-fact it isn’t even always referred to as honeycomb. Depending where you are from you may be more familiar with Cinder Toffee, Sponge Candy, Puff Candy and more!

Some of these names may have given you a bit of a hint to what this delicious treat actually entails however not completely, generally honeycomb is created by heating golden syrup to create a stunning caramel then a sprinkling of bicarbonate of soda is added to the mix as it is taken off the heat and whisked until it looks good enough to add to some baking paper and wait until it dries. Of course our method and the methods of any honeycomb expert differs from this slightly as we create our own gorgeous caramel recipes which make for even more delicious honeycomb but there are the basics.

What Makes Honeycomb So Popular?

Loved around the world by Chocolatiers, Chefs and Customers alike, honeycomb is an attractive way to add a mouthwatering toffee kick to any dish or treat whilst also adding a crispy yet light texture uncharacteristic of toffee.

Toffee can be a hard flavour to add to treats, not only this for some people it can also be hard or impossible to eat, with honeycomb being a gorgeous and brittle texture it is easy to see why many people see it as a tastier alternative to toffee, not to mention it is much easier to add to create a hint of toffee that is not as overpowering and chunky as traditional toffee.

Honeycomb has many alternating ways to present and arrange it in a dessert or chocolate allowing you to create a variety of different textures and flavours from the same recipe. Its diversity is just another characteristic which allows honeycomb to remain so popular throughout the world, not to mention its light, golden and flakey appearance adding a clear luxury feel to any dish or sweet it features in.

What makes honeycomb and chocolate the perfect combination

No matter where you are in the world caramel or toffee and chocolate will follow you, and many will argue that they’re the best flavours for chocolate with the sweet and sometimes salty flavour pairing flawlessly with the smooth and silkiness of the chocolate creating a mouthwatering flavour that will have you wanting more and more until you run out of chocolate.

Well, in our opinion, honeycomb takes this enticing combination to another level, offering varying levels of toffee flavour to suit your needs with the addition of a satisfying crunch for each piece of honeycomb, taking that chocolate binge to a whole new level.

Our honeycomb covered bites truly are the ultimate combination, we take our large honeycomb pieces and smother them in remarkable Belgian chocolate to create a complete chocolate experience, our brittle honeycomb easily falls apart with a bite as the entire piece melts in your mouth.

How To Pick The Best Honeycomb Chocolate

As mentioned earlier, the basics of creating honeycomb is fairly easy, and with that comes lots of brands creating their own versions to sell, but how do you know which ones are good and which ones aren’t?

Well, the number one rule when looking out for a good piece of honeycomb is to stay away from the mainstream brands, though they’re great if you’re in a shop and are just looking for a quick snack but if you’re looking for the best around to truly treat yourself then as with everything you have to look further than your generic mass-produced goods to get a truly amazing experience.

After this one key thing we advise to lookout for is what produces the company sells, picking a company that either focuses largely on their honeycomb or even toffees and caramels will put you in a much better stead than a company that has a main focus of chocolate or something else but have simply added this option to appeal to a wider audience. This also goes for how the company pushes the product, if it’s one of their main flagship products then they’ve clearly put a lot of thought and effort into the recipe and haven’t simply given it a go to see how well it sells.

Now you know what to look out for when it comes to the honeycomb our final point would be to find out what chocolate they use, the honeycomb may be out of this world but if they’re using basic store bought chocolate to pour over the top you’re not going to enjoy it anywhere near as much as if they were using swiss or belgian chocolate with higher cocoa content.

We fell in love with honeycomb chocolate, which we would always call cinder toffee as children, whenever the weather would begin to get colder our grandparents would use their very own recipe to bring us some gorgeous honeycomb chocolate which would always be coupled with a nice warm cocoa. Though very sweet this is a combination that we still to this day; find unbelievably good, and can be the perfect way to welcome those cold nights by the fire.

We of course learned our grandparents recipe which our family has continued to create and improve to this day where you can now try it for yourself!

If you don’t have quite the sweet tooth we do then suggest another great alternative is a lovely glass of milk, warm or cold, to help compliment that smooth chocolate and toffee combination.
